Famous For Being Famous is a 150 minute art documentary comprised of archive interviews, paparazzi clips, and intertitles showcasing Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian’s meteoric rise to fame. In 2005, Paris Hilton was the most googled item in the world and defined what it means to be a celebrity in the new millennium. Today, Paris has launched her brand on an international level while Kim Kardashian has dominated US headlines and amassed 50 million Instagram followers. Our culture has always been fascinated with elite members of society, but with the power of social media and reality television, more people than ever can obtain fame. Why is our culture so obsessed with these figures? Are the Kardashians destined to fade into obscurity or will they be able to turn their 15 minutes of fame into 30?

Don’t click play unless you have a free two hours. This is amazing. After working in PR, I realized how much of every celebrity image is branding and appearances and so much more strategic than the public even realizes. But to actually see the evolution is incredible. (Not gonna lie, it made me wanna take some notes.) I love how by the end Paris Hilton is doing interviews for WSJ and is a full fledged empire.
A standout quote from her manager was, “ I imagined what it’d be like if Barbie could talk and that’d the biggest brand in the world.” and even Kim K’s momagers admits that every move they did was planned. It’s genius.
(Honestly if someone could figure out how to portray the sugar babies in a positive light, it’d be an awesome brand but no reality shows have been brave enough to take it beyond its “ shock value.” Like just imagine, reality show comes out of you dating these wealthy men, portraying your lifestyle not as a spoiled naive brat like these Lifetime movies but as a strategic businesswoman who knows what she’s doing and is beautiful, intelligent and dangerous. The reality show wraps, you find an older male actor to marry and it skyrockets from there…. I mean who wouldn’t watch that?)
I am in college majoring in PR now and this, your comment made me watch it because I am always looking for information that shows how celebrities calculate their rise to fame. Thank you for sharing! It’s great so far @bondgirlsugar
